Malaysia is an outward-looking upper-middle income country located in South East Asia. Having recovered rapidly from the Global Financial Crisis in 2009, Malaysia soon embarked on a comprehensive review of its whole education system, aiming to develop a new National Education Blueprint.
With an estimated 42% of global enrolments expected to be from the East Asia and Pacific region by 2035, Malaysia – both its education system and its market of international students – will become increasingly important in the context of regional and global education markets.
With much work still to be done to develop the domestic educational infrastructure – Malaysia did not have one public university in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2013 – and the economy performing well, demand for overseas study is still high.
