Mexico is the 3rd largest source of international students from Latin America after Brazil and Colombia. In recent years, NAFTA (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) has helped to increase the number of Mexican students travelling north, both into the US and into Canada.
Mexico is estimated to be in the world’s top 20 countries for higher education enrolment by 2035, this means households’ ability and willingness to send their children abroad for schooling – already on the rise – will likely follow suit.
Canada has included Mexico as one of its top priority markets and intends to double the number of Mexican students by 2020; President Obama recently announced the ‘100,000 strong in the Americas’ initiative, which will also be beneficial for Mexican outbound mobility.
